2 Great Mid Power Rockets

2 great options for a mid power rocket.

Here are my two favorite mid power rockets and ones that I would highly recommend you buy. For any of these rockets I would recommend launching them at a club and with a Jolly Logic Chute Release to minimize drift.

1. The Majestic

This was my first mid power rocket and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to get into mid power rocketry or if you are looking for another versatile model rocket. It is 2 inches in diameter and 35 inches long (see picture above). This is a great size for a smaller mid power rocket. It retails currently for around $50 (purchase it here).

It is a very simple rocket to put together, the fins snap through the body tube and into cutouts in the centering rings. The fins and most of the materials, beside the tubes, are made out durable plastic. I recommend building this rocket with epoxy, as it will give the rocket extra strength, so you can launch it with large motors.

I recommend that you launch this at a club, because they usually have large fields needed for recovery, and they have the launch equipment already. If your club has launch rails install 1010 rail guides to give this rocket a straighter flight. If you are launching this at your own field, I recommend you get the Estes Pro Series II launch pad and launch controller. This will make sure your rocket launch lugs fit with the rod, and that your controller has enough power to fire off larger, and possibly, composite motors.

For the motor, I recommend flying this rocket first on a D22-4. Some safe launches to 1,000 feet could be with an Aerotech E20-7 and E30-7. If you want higher altitude flights you can fly it on the Aerotech F25-9 to 2,500 feet. You could launch the Majestic on a G motor but I am not sure how well it will hold up.

2. LOC Forte

This is a great rocket when you are more experienced in mid power rocketry. It requires a very powerful F motor or a G motor to even get in the air. It is a 3.1 inch diameter rocket and is 43.5 inches tall (see picture below). It retails for around $90 (purchase here).

This is a nice, high quality rocket. It contains high quality wood with the fins and centering rings being thick enough to withstand a lot of force. The Forte also comes with a 1/4 inch launch lug and 1010 rail buttons, you should definitely install the rail buttons instead of the launch lugs. It comes with a high quality recovery system, including a 28 inch ripstop nylon parachute and 15 feet of nylon shock cord. This it also contains a payload space which can be used to swap out the coupler with a electronic bay in order to convert the rocket to dual deploy.

You definitely want to launch the Forte at a club because it is high power capable and is a large rocket that would be hard to fit on a normal launch pad. It could be done but I would not suggest it. Some motor recommendations would be the Aerotech F67-4 to 400 feet, the Aerotech G77 to 1300 feet, and other high thrust G motors. This kit is high power capable because it can fit up to J motors in it. It is possible to get your level 1 certification with this rocket, but it would be going around 2000-3000 feet which in my opinion, is a bit high for a certification flight.

Those are 2 mid power rockets that I suggest. Have a great day and may your skies be blue!
